I realize it’s hard, if not impossible for me or anyone to ask you to maintain honesty and integrity when it looks like everyone around us is completely devoid of morals, reason and they’ve utterly abandoned logic.
Over the last few years, large corporations and even government institutions seem to operate with a complete disregard for ethics and integrity, so it would be easy for small business owners to become disillusioned and abandon their own moral compasses. I completely understand what you would be thinking.
However, now more than ever, maintaining an iron-jawed commitment to honesty and ethical principles is not just the right thing to do — it’s a strategic imperative that can set your business apart and build lasting trust with customers. And yes, our country actually depends on it — put another way, we are depending on you.
As we’ve witnessed the downfall of once-venerated brands due to scandals, cover-ups, and blatant disregard for the well-being of consumers and employees, it’s clear that the days of blind faith in big business and government are long gone.
From the Enron debacle to the Volkswagen emissions scandal, to Disney sexualizing children, to producing processed foods that are actually poisoning us and causing cancer, to a government that either turns a blind eye to it or outright permits is, it seems that greed, deception, and a lack of accountability have become the norm in the upper echelons of the corporate world and the government itself.
Not to be opportunistic, but this erosion of public trust presents a golden opportunity for small businesses to stand out and distinguish themselves by clinging for dear life to the very values that their larger counterparts have abandoned.
By keeping integrity and honesty at the core of their marketing and operations, savvy entrepreneurs can build and grow a loyal customer base that craves the TRUE authenticity and trustworthiness that has become so scarce. Honest entrepreneurs with integrity have become an endangered species, which makes you valuable in the marketplace and society.
Just a quick FYI — I use the word authenticity, but I honestly believe nobody these days really wants authenticity, they want a fake sense of it. They want to claim authenticity and throw that word around, while abandoning reason and honesty. So it’s become a culture of unauthentic, dishonest and disingenuous people claiming to want authenticity. It’s baffling to me. So when I use the word authenticity or authentic, I mean the old version of it, not today’s Instagram version of it.
So with all these unauthentic claims by disingenuous people, consumers are hungry for people and businesses they can believe in. By leading with honesty and transparency, small companies can build a sense of genuine rapport and goodwill that connects far deeper than any slick advertising campaign selling snake oil.
Take the example of Family Hardware, a local family-owned hardware store that has thrived for generations by prioritizing integrity above all else. Rather than engage in the kind of deceptive pricing tactics and shoddy workmanship that have plagued big-box retailers, Family Hardware takes pride in fair, upfront pricing and standing behind every product and service they offer.
This commitment to honesty has earned them the unwavering loyalty of their community, who know they can trust the Family Hardware team to always put their best interests first.
As discussed in the article “How John Deere Built Timeless Loyalty Through Its Green Legacy”, companies that consistently embody their values and prioritize authenticity can cultivate long-lasting brand loyalty, even in the face of fierce competition.
In the same vein, small businesses that make integrity and transparency the foundation of their marketing and operations are positioned to thrive in an environment where consumer trust has become a rare and precious commodity.
Integrating honesty and integrity into your small business marketing doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are some strategies to consider:
Today, corporate greed and deception have become all too commonplace, small businesses have a unique opportunity to reclaim the moral high ground and assert their rightful place as the beacons of integrity and trust in their communities.
By keeping honesty and ethical behavior at the heart of their marketing and operations, savvy entrepreneurs can not only differentiate themselves but also grow a loyal customer base that will stand with them through thick and thin.
