Have you ever felt constrained by conventional thinking? Shackled to the status quo of being just another employee? The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche imagined the “Übermensch” — a superior human who breaks free from societal constraints through sheer force of will and self-mastery.
While his idea was philosophically complex and would be impossible to distill in this one article, we can apply it as a motivational metaphor for the ambitious entrepreneur.
The trail-blazing Übermensch embodied independence, creativity, and the courage to not just accept the values of the herd, but to create new values.
As a business owner, you have already taken a crucial first step — declaring independence from the 9-to-5 rat race. You had the audacity to buck conventional wisdom about job security to charter your own path. This kernel of the Übermensch mindset lives within you.
But the journey does not stop there. We must continually challenge mediocrity and the temptation to just maintain the status quo. Tap into that same spirit that sparked you to start your own enterprise. View your business not just as a way to make money, but as a creative force that brings new value to the world through your products, services, and innovations.
Cast off the shackles of playing it safe and limiting yourself to what has always been done. An Übermensch entrepreneurial spirit dares to dream big, set lofty goals, and blaze new trails rather than following well-trodden paths.
You may never achieve Nietzsche’s idea of a supreme human remake of all values. But by embodying that striving for more — persistent ambition, a willingness to take calculated risks on your unique vision, and the grit to overcome inevitable obstacles — you will propel yourself miles ahead of the merely complacent competitors.
Don’t be confined by conventional morality that breeds mediocrity. Ethical behavior and integrity are non-negotiable. But shed arbitrary constraints of unquestioned dogma that no longer serve your entrepreneurial spirit. You alone must determine and uphold the values that empower your business towards ever-greater heights.
The possibilities for small business Übermenschen are limitless in today’s rapidly evolving and chaotic world. New markets, distribution channels, and business models are ripe for those daring enough to spot the opportunities and seize them. Complacent companies born of conventional herd-thinking will be displaced by nimble entrepreneurs hungering for more.
Nietzsche had a complex perspective on human suffering. On one hand, he saw suffering as an inescapable part of the human condition that should be fully embraced rather than avoided or eliminated. He believed that by facing suffering head-on and mastering pain, we could become stronger and elevate ourselves. And this is echoed by many of today’s self-help gurus.
In his famous quote, Nietzsche wrote: “That which does not kill us, makes us stronger.” This suggests that overcoming difficulties and adversities is what allows us to grow and progress as individuals.
We can apply these ideas to provide fortifying advice for small business owners facing the inevitable challenges, setbacks and suffering that entrepreneurship entails:
As a business owner, suffering in the form of failures, financial stresses, loneliness, sole responsibility and other hardships is unavoidable. But like Nietzsche’s Übermensch, you must not just grit your teeth and endure — you must embrace these tests of fire.
Setbacks and pressures are not the enemy, but the crucible that allows you to forge yourself into an ever-stronger, more resilient entrepreneur and person.
Do not wish suffering away or resign yourself to a life of mediocre comfort. That is a denial of the full depth of life’s struggles and successes. Adversity provides the resistance that enables growth, just as lifting heavier weights builds greater muscle. Approach each obstacle as an opportunity to elevate your mettle.
When cash flows dip, embrace the burden of responsibility to safeguard your team’s livelihoods — let it imbue you with deeper perspective. When investors or partners lose faith, let it inspire a “persevere or perish” intensity. Confront each hurdle unflinchingly, attack it with strategy, and emerge that much wiser and more formidable.
Many businesses crumble because the founders lack the fortitude to push through the arduous phases. The bitter taste of sustained struggle wears them down. But you must metabolize pain into fuel for your ambition. Constant ease and comfort are the enemies — they breed complacency and atrophy our spirit.
So when the inevitable trials and tribulations batter your enterprise, recognize them as the crucibles that will ultimately shine a brutal light on your truest capabilities.
Embrace the struggle, transmute it into positive energy and use it to elevate Verstärkung (reinforcement) your business to the next level. What doesn’t kill you truly can make you stronger — but only if you have the courage to face it down.
So embrace the fire of ambition that scorches away mediocre expectations. Relentlessly cultivate your personal and professional willpower through self-mastery. Continually evolve with creative solutions that overdeliver value to customers.
While you may never achieve supreme transcendence of all human limits, by steadfastly embodying the Übermensch entrepreneurial spirit, you will ascend to heights that the herd cannot even imagine possible. Your business and self will both be elevated to their highest potentials.
