Have Fun and Build Your Brand Through Fun Community Events

Build Brand Excitement and Connect With Customers by Sponsoring Local Festivities

I have to admit, I got the idea for this article this morning when I came across a video about the Cannonball Run. It was a movie I loved as a kid about an outlawed cross-country car race. And, they actually do it today. I loved it.

However, since I cannot in good conscience promote illegal activities, as fun as this one is, I can encourage you to promote your business by promoting and getting involved in other fun local community events.

As a business owner, you’re always looking for ways to market your brand and connect with potential customers. One fun approach is to associate your business with fun community activities that bring people together.

By sponsoring or participating in popular local events, you can build positive brand recognition and show your support for the community at the same time.

Warnings:

The key is to steer clear of activism or issues that divide people. No matter your social or political feelings about these issues or current events, I strongly encourage you to completely stay away from these divisive topics and events. It’s bad for your business and it’s bad for the country.

Positive Family-Friendly Events:

Instead, focus on positive family-friendly, civic, and social events that have wide appeal, and bring people together. I mean, what do you want to be known for, diving people or the place where people have a good time?

There’s no shortage of opportunities, from little league baseball games and marathons to larger draws like NASCAR races and professional sports.

Reasons to Get Involved:

Why Get Involved? The benefits of tying your business to fun activities are plentiful:

  • Positive brand exposure to targeted local audience
  • Opportunities for grassroots marketing and sampling
  • Associate your brand with good times and happy memories
  • Build goodwill by supporting beloved community traditions
  • Give back while getting your name out there
  • You and your business become known in the community and will become pillars of the community

Having Fun Is a Must:

Whatever event you choose, the most important thing is to have fun with it! Encourage your employees to attend and enjoy the festivities while representing the business. Spread an energetic, upbeat vibe that mirrors the exciting environment. People will associate those positive feelings with your brand.

Hand out free swag, run engaging promotions, and make sure to capture plenty of smiling faces and memorable moments to share later on social media. The more fun and enthused you and your team seem, the more others will connect your business with that happy, festive mindset.

Find the Right Fit:

Not sure where to start? Look for popular, well-attended events that complement your brand’s identity, events and activities you yourself are interested in or that are popular in your community or that target your business’s demographics. Things like:

  • Youth sports leagues and tournaments
  • Outdoor concerts and festivals
  • Holiday celebrations like parades or fireworks
  • Fitness events like marathons or bike races
  • College or high school athletics

Additional ideas:

Here are some additional ideas for fun community activities businesses can get involved with:

Car Shows and Motorcycle Rallies:

Car and motorcycle enthusiasts love any chance to show off their prized vehicles. Sponsoring or participating in local car shows, bike nights, or rallies is a great way for automotive businesses to connect with their target audience in a fun setting. Set up a vendor booth, run promotional giveaways, or let employees volunteer as judges. Having staff members bring their own classic cars or motorcycles adds an extra cool factor.

Trade Shows and Conventions:

While not inherently “fun,” major trade shows and industry conventions offer excellent branding opportunities. Go all-out on engaging booth activities, interactive demos, and impressive displays. Make it a can’t-miss destination with games, giveaways, photo ops and more to leave a lasting impression. Attendees will associate your brand with an entertaining experience.

Truck Shows and Motocross Events:

The arrival of a truck show or Motocross event is a huge deal for gearheads of all ages. The chance to see mighty big rigs or death-defying stunts up close draws massive crowds. For businesses that cater to automotive, transportation, or outdoor markets, having a visibility at these spectacles is a must. Go all out with vehicle displays, hospitality areas, and race team sponsorships.

Local Fairs and Festivals:

Community fairs and outdoor festivals are like one big par-tay for the whole family. It’s a prime opportunity for businesses to let their hair down and join in on the fun. Embrace the revelry with games, prizes, entertainers, treats, and swag giveaways. Make your booth a destination by embracing the festive spirit. Restaurants can even set up mini food courts.

Community Parades and Celebrations:

There’s nothing like a local parade or celebration to inspire community pride and camaraderie. Smart businesses will get in on the action by sponsoring festive floats or units that spread smiles and cheer. Go all out on theming with colorful decorations, fun costumes, and lively music. Few things build positive brand awareness like making kids’ eyes light up with delight.

Park & Rec Activities:

By partnering with local parks & rec departments, businesses can sponsor all sorts of outdoor events and activities that bring families together. It could be providing branded t-shirts for youth sports teams, running a free clinic teaching a new skill, or hosting fitness challenges with prizes. Parks are natural community hubs, so getting involved creates valuable connections.

Supportive Role Ideas:

Here are a couple ideas about involving your company and employees in supportive roles at community events:

One great way to get involved is by having your employees volunteer in supportive roles at events like marathons, fun runs, bike races and other athletic activities.

For example, your team could hand out bottled water or sports drinks to participants along the race route. This small act of refreshment would be hugely appreciated by exhausted athletes pushing themselves to the limit.

Not only does this put your brand name and logo on useful items going directly into people’s hands, but you’re also providing welcome aid during a grueling physical challenge.

Participants will associate your business with the relief and motivation they felt in that moment. Your employees can cheer people on, creating a fun, energetic environment that leaves a positive impression.

For larger race events, businesses could set up aid stations sponsored and staffed by their team. This gives participants repeated exposure to your brand while they refuel and see the friendly, supportive faces of your employees. It’s a great photo opp to capture your team in action and document the experience to share later.

Another idea is to have employees volunteer as course marshals directing traffic or cheering on competitors at key areas like the finish line. Seeing your team’s enthusiasm and encouragement resonates with the crowd. You could award prizes or trophies branded with your logo as extra motivation.

The possibilities are endless for how you can use your employee volunteers to assist at community events in helpful yet highly visible ways. It’s a low-cost way to give back, create positive associations with your brand, and have fun bonding as a team — all while connecting face-to-face with your target audience. The goodwill generated can go a long way in strengthening your business’s local ties.

Embrace the Fun:

The key for any of these community tie-ins is to fully embrace the fun, upbeat spirit of the event. Have energetic employees representing your brand in an engaging way. The more you tap into the excitement and good-time vibes, the more strongly attendees will associate those positive feelings with your business. It’s memorable marketing that money can’t buy.

A Great Example:

John Deere

Some ways John Deere has gotten involved with local communities and events include:

  • Sponsoring farm progress shows, state fairs, and agricultural expositions where they can showcase their latest equipment.
  • Having entries and floats in local parades, often featuring antique John Deere tractors which are very popular.
  • Supporting youth organizations like 4-H and FFA by providing grants, sponsoring competitions, and having a presence at their events.
  • Sponsoring rodeos, tractor pulls, and other rural sporting events that align with their agricultural roots.
  • Getting involved with community gardens, parks projects, and green space initiatives by contributing equipment and volunteer labor.
  • Having John Deere equipment “petting zoos” at county fairs where kids can climb on and learn about the machines.

Wrapping Up:

Get creative and put a fun spin on it! For example, a restaurant could hand out free snack samples at a little league baseball game. A sporting goods store could sponsor the local hot dog eating contest. The key is to immerse your business in an atmosphere of carefree community fun.

In today’s hot and divisive political and social climate, joining forces with beloved local traditions is a fantastic way to boost your brand visibility and perception and spread some well needed good-will.

As long as you steer clear of divisive issues and fully commit to having a blast, you’ll reinforce positive associations between your business and good times. The community will appreciate your support and you’ll gain more fans and customers in the process.
